Noel Gallagher gets a huge ego boost at NME Awards, while One Direction and Justin Bieber win awards they probably weren’t after in the first place
It’s safe to say we were out of our depth in terms of ‘being cool’ at last night’s NME Awards – the red carpet was full of trendy rocker types who made us feel wobbly and insecure (even though we were wearing a cool hat).
The ceremony was full of the sad news that Davy Jones had died of a massive heart attack, with many discussing their favourite Monkees songs with us on the red carpet (video on the way) before heading in to toast his memory.
During the awards, Noel Gallagher was declared a Godlike Genius in the biggest honour of the evening. The former Oasis frontman took to the stage at the Brixton Academy to thank everyone for the gong, telling the audience: “I'd like to start by saying to all the people up there who bothered to buy a ticket, a CD, or a T-shirt because that's what f***ing counts: the merchandise, thank you.”
NME magazine's editor Krissi Murison said Noel was "A man who has written more anthems in the last two decades than anyone else".
The crowd saw tributes to Noel from Paul Weller, Kinks frontman Ray Davies and comic Russell Brand who said the songwriter was "A hero to a generation".

Also picking up an honorary award were painfully cool band Pulp who were recognised for their Outstanding Contribution to Music. Jarvis Cocker dedicated the award to "All the people who came to see us last year, because a concert without an audience is just a very long soundcheck.
Other big winners included Florence + The Machine who won Best Solo Artist, beating Adele to the award, despite admitting: "It's never been clear whether I am a solo artist". She also won Best Track for Shake It Out.
Kasabian opened the show and won Best British Band and dedicated their award to Davy Jones before bursting into an impromptu version of The Monkees theme on stage.
Posh host Jack Whitehall saw his own show, student comedy Fresh Meat, named Best TV Show. Funny that. He also made a crack at James Corden following his drama with Adele at the Brit Awards. He said: “House rules: no long speeches, I'm not afraid of doing a Corden. I've got Blur waiting to come on like THAT.”
Muse frontman Matt Bellamy was named Hero Of The Year while poor little Justin Bieber was declared Villain Of The Year for the second time in a row. He also picked up the Worst Album gong for Under The Mistletoe.
On his eighteenth birthday and everything .
X Factor losers One Direction were named Worst Band, after more than 10 million votes were cast for the annual awards on the magazines website. That’s a lot of haters.
