Taipei, March 7 (CNA) A 19-year-old Taiwanese who secured a contract with the Beijing Baxy United Sports Football Club in February will fly to China Friday to join his new team ahead of its March 16 opener, Taiwan's Chinese Taipei Football Association said Wednesday.
Chen Hao-wei, a student at Taipei Physical Education College, was invited for tryouts by the China League One team after a strong performance at the Long Teng Cup -- an international football tournament -- in Taiwan last year.
Of the three Taiwanese players invited, Chen was the only one who received a two-year contract, the association said.
Calling it a "dream come true," Chen said he wanted to play soccer "in a simple environment, which will allow me to concentrate on my career."
When asked how he would deal with the pressure of playing professionally in China's second-tier professional soccer league, Chen said, "I want to learn to be independent first and try to be myself."
His salary will be discussed before the team's opening match on March 16, according to Chen.
The press in China praised Chen as a new hope who could help promote cooperation in sports between the two sides.
Another young Taiwanese soccer player, Chen Po-liang, also joined a China League One club, the Shenzhen Ruby, last month.
With only a semi-professional soccer leag.
