Who beat who at the National TV Awards?

CoronationSt_Becky_leaves
It was only Monday that Becky was bidding Corrie goodbye on our screens as she jetted off into the sunset with Steve begging her to stay. She departed in true “Bet Lynch” leopard print style.
Fast forward three days later and Katherine Kelly who plays Becky has not only won the best serial drama performance at the National TV Awards but she’s also treading the boards at the National Theatre. It’s a long way from being the biggest booze-soaked, jilted wreck on the Street.
Kelly was unable to accept the award at last night’s ceremony at the O2 arena in London because of her stage commitments. We suspect that isn’t the last we’ve seen of her on our screens, such is her talent.
The coveted prize of best drama serial was won by Coronation Street who stole the title from last year’s winner EastEnders. The Corrie cast dedicated their win to legendary Betty Driver, of hotpot fame, who died last year.
The National TV Awards are voted for by the public so there were no major shock results. However, given viewing figures of X Factor’s last series were down on previous year’s, Simon Cowell may have been surprised to beat Strictly to the best talent show title. So surprised in fact that he didn’t turn up.
I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! also trounced its competition (The Only Way Is Essex, Come Dine With Me and The Apprentice) to pick up the best reality programme gong and best entertainment presenter for Ant & Dec.
While ITV had another deserved winner in Downton Abbey which beat Waterloo Road (last year’s title holder), Merlin and Doctor Who (all BBC) to best drama gong.
David Walliams, who picked up a Landmark award for his BT Sport Relief challenge of swimming the Thames, accepted his award by suggesting that Alan Carr might do the challenge in a thong this year. Perish the thought!
