Demi Moore is reported to have "smoked something" before the collapse that led to her being hospitalised earlier this week.
US gossip site TMZ has obtained an audio recording in which the friend who called an ambulance can be heard telling the emergency operator what had happened.
The female friend can be heard saying that Demi, 49, was "semi conscious and barely breathing".
And she went on to say: "She's smoked something. It's not marijuana but it's similar to incense and she's been having convulsions of some sort... She's burning up. She smoked something.
"She's been having some issues lately with some other stuff. I don't know what she's been taking... I don't know, there's been some stuff recently that we're all just finding out."
But by the end of the call the friend tells the operator that Demi is "much calmer" and "breathing fine".
Demi, who recently split from hubby Ashton Kutcher, was rushed to hospital on Monday and was reported to have collapsed from "exhaustion", with later reports suggesting she may also be suffering from anorexia.
Ashton has publicly expressed his concern for his estranged wife.
