DROPPED: Lawson Park Hotel's Jesse Tomlinson puts down a return catch from Mitchell Hearn in Federal Hotel's thrilling one wicket win.
Federal Hotel escaped by the skin of their teeth in their crucial Mudgee District Cricket Association first grade match with Lawson Park Hotel on Saturday.
Chasing 148 to win, Federal did it the hard way, winning by one wicket with one over to go.
Young guns James Ford and Ryan Kurtz held their nerve to steer Federal to their fifth win of the season.
It's not the first time Federal or Lawson Park have played a thrilling match.
Last summer, the two teams had a match that ended in a tie.
The tie result was on the cards but Ford managed to scamper home for two runs off the final ball of Lawson Park captain Jacob Edmonds' ninth over.
It was another heart-stopper for the Federal team who have been involved in a few tight matches this season already.
Although they were on the wrong end of those results, luck appears to be favouring Steve Knight's men.
Without some of their big guns like Ben Reynolds and Andrew Gay, Lawson Park won the toss and elected to bat.
They lost in-form batsman Jacob Suttor (9) and first drop Darren Snyder (6) before the score had reached 30.
But Edmonds and Stuart Fredericks got the innings back on track.
Fresh from scores of 11, 29 and 38 at Western Zone's unsuccessful Bradman Cup campaign last week, Fredericks hit 42 opening the batting for the Parkers.
His captain, Edmonds, also chipped in with 30 of his own before the 62-run partnership between the pair was broken.
Lawson Park cruised to 5-144 with four overs to go.
But Federal's opening bowlers James O'Brien (3-38 off nine overs) and Mitchell Hearn (4-18 off 9.3) stepped up and caused destruction.
The pair took the remaining five wickets in four overs, as Lawson Park, who looked like posting a score of 170, were skittled for 147.
In reply, Federal made a solid start thanks to Rodney Cooke (22) and O'Brien (20) who put on 36 for the first-wicket.
But the wheels fell off as Federal slumped to 6-64.
Jesse Tomlinson (3-39 off nine) and Jacob Suttor (3-23 off 10) teared through the top order.
Troy Kenny (32) and Cameron Cox (19) put on 53 runs for the seventh-wicket but more wickets tumbled thanks to Edmonds' 3-39.
At 9-131, Kurtz (3 not out) joined Ford (16 not out) at the crease.
The Mudgee High School teammates proved to be stubborn opponents for the Lawson Park bowlers.
The two hit 10 runs off one over to guide Federal to a memorable win.
The one wicket victory ensures Federal remains in second spot on the competition ladder, seven points clear of Lawson who are third.
