UFC returns to Atlanta on April 21 with UFC 146 event

The UFC is finally coming back to the southeast as it was announced that UFC 146 will take place on April 21 in Atlanta, Georgia. The news broke last night on theUFC Tonight show that airs on FUEL TV.
This will be the first time that the UFC has returned to Atlanta since UFC 88 which took place back in 2008 at the Phillips Arena. That event was headlined by Chuck Liddelltaking on Rashad Evans. A memorable bout in which Evans knocked out Liddell in the second round in highlight reel fashion. The event drew a crowd of almost 15,000 for a live gate of 2.6 million.
It’ll be interesting to see how this card will unfold and who will headline the Atlanta event.
UFC 145 in currently without a main event which will take place on March 24 in Canada. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has stated that he is ‘itching’ to get back into action after asking for four to five months off after defeating Lyoto Machidaat UFC 140 in December which also took place in Canada. Rashad Evans will be fighting Phil Davis later this month and will fight Jones later this year if victorious.
I’m speculating here, but it’s possible that the UFC could make Jones vs. Evans as the main event of UFC 146. Evans has headlined there before and there’s a huge African-American population in the area. It would be a good opportunity to reach out to that demographic with two African-American’s fighting in the main event. Not to mention that whichever event is lucky enough to get the Jones/Evans fight will do mega numbers in regards to PPV buys. Also, if Evan’s happens to get injured in his bout with Davis it’s possible that they could do Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson. Henderson also fought on the UFC 88 card that took place back in 2008 where he won a unanimous decision over Rousimar Palhares.
Stay tuned to Pro MMA Now for future updates on the card!
