Madonna: Superstar, super-stylish - if only she'd worn different gloves...
Madonna is in London to promote her directorial debut W.E - this much is fact. What’s less clear is why the 53-year-old actress is so keen on her leather gloves.
Like, really keen on them.
The otherwise glamorous star looked stunning in London’s Leicester Square last night, wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier dress, Dolce & Gabbana cape and a sprinkling of Van Cleef & Arpels jewels.
Madonna looked stunning last night, but surely she can loose the gloves?
She added on-trend 1940s retro waves, a slick of red lippie and accessorised with red hot platform pumps.
So far so stylish.
The red hot YSL Tribute heels were a fabulous touch. But the gloves? Not so much
But then the singer did a silly…and slung on some leather gloves – again – it’s a look she’s been (single-handedly) championing for some time now.
She even styled one glove up with a Van Cleef & Arpels Flying Butterfly ring in white gold and diamonds.
Black, elbow-length, red or studded -what is it about the leather lovelies that Madonna’s so keen on?
The singer turned film director is rarely seen out and about without gloves on nowadays
Time and time again Madonna has slipped on a winning red carpet look and then slipped up, by sticking on a pair of LOOK AT ME gloves.
If she’s trying to divert attention away from her hands, then surely an outfit-appropriate pair would be much more fitting…
Is this picture to blame for Madonna's arm wear?
...Louis Vuitton’s elbow-length styles would work perfectly with the cape and keep her arms warm to boot. Erdem’s AW11 floral styles would be great with any tea dress while Marc Jacobs driving gloves are perfect any time she may fancy giving her look a 1960s edge...if it's a statement she's after she could have worn Lanvin's £870 crystal studded pair here.
But bright RED?!
Perhaps she should try Topshop’s £16 classic style - which would have more than sufficed on the night.
Yet no one gets people talking quite like Madonna does - whether these gloves are a form of armour, or if she’s making a whopping great statement – the fact of the matter is she’s unlikely to shake them off anytime soon.
Indeed Madonna made another statement last night too – announcing the name of her upcoming twelfth (*woah*) studio album MDMA. It not only refers to Madonna's name but is an abbreviation for mitochondrial DNA, aka the genetics passed from mother to child (nice touch Madonna).
More controversially (NB the above) it’s meaning also nods to the drug MDMA.
Above all else, Madonna loves to keep fans on their toes – be it album names of her latest choice of arm wear.
W.E (ahem) all know that good styling is in Madonna’s DNA - hell, she has her pick of the catwalks and undoubtedly many a designer pal on speed dial too – so perhaps we should just put this case of Glove Love down to cold hands. Or should we?
